God of War Ragnarok Is Confirmed for PC Steam

God of War: Ragnarok will be releasing on Steam late this summer. During a new PlayStation presentation, a new State of Play, which was filled with significant announcements, including the confirmation of various rumors, such as the upcoming arrival of God of War Ragnarok on PC. This title, which originally came out in 2022, will have a new release window when it arrives on Steam and Epic Games for PC on September 19th.

God of War Ragnarok Come to PC

Additionally, the company has recently been venturing into the PC world, and some of the announced games will also be coming to that platform. One of them is God of War: Ragnarök, the sequel to the reboot starring Kratos, which will receive a PC port with several new features. However, Sony will have a requirement for those who wish to play this title on PC: they must have a PlayStation Network account to use the game.

The news was revealed in the same trailer announcing this new version of the title. At the beginning of the video, in addition to clarifying that what is shown was captured on PC, Sony clarifies the PlayStation Network account requirement. Previously, the company had implied that this would only be a requirement for the multiplayer aspects of their games, such as the PC version of Ghost of Tsushima.

PSN Account is a Requirement

Sony had already faced issues with another game, Helldivers 2, for enforcing this requirement months after the game had been released, to the point that the title garnered over 100,000 negative reviews on Steam. Similarly, fans reacted negatively to the requirement for God of War: Ragnarök, as countries where PlayStation Network is not available simply won’t be able to access the game.

This controversial strategy regarding their PC releases aligns with a recent press conference, where the new CEOs of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino, discussed the role of PC in the company’s business. According to the executives, live-service multiplayer titles will be released on both PlayStation and PC simultaneously, but this will be different for games with narrative experiences.

Sony hopes that by releasing the first installments of their franchises on PC and delaying their sequels on this platform, users will migrate to PlayStation to continue those stories. This reasoning was met with much criticism from the PC gaming community, who questioned why they should buy a console when they could simply wait.

God of War: Ragnarök will arrive on PC on September 19th with support for super ultrawide screens, the inclusion of the Valhalla DLC, and more.
